During Monday night’s City Commission Meeting, Jason Gage was sworn in as Brentwood’s new City Manager.

“I want to thank you for placing your faith and confidence in me,” Gage said to the Commission. “I want you to know that my wife and I are excited to be in Brentwood, we’re excited to serve. We’re excited to take this beautiful, wonderful place and hopefully keep it that way and make it better in time.”

On Jan. 31, former City Manager Kirk Bednar retired, ending his more than 24-year career in Brentwood. The City Commission hired Government Professional Services (GPS), an executive search firm, to conduct a national search for Bednar’s replacement. The firm received more than 50 applications from highly qualified candidates, and the City Commission narrowed that pool to five finalists.

After a long interview process, the commission selected Gage to lead the Brentwood city team. His first official day was Monday, April 28.

“Jason, we are so very glad you are here,” Mayor Mark Gorman said.

A southwest Missouri native, Gage earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Missouri Southern State University and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Missouri. He is a credentialed member of the ICMA, and he previously served as the city manager for Salina, Kansas; Stillwater, Oklahoma; and De Soto, Missouri. Recently, Gage spent more than six years as city manager of Springfield, Missouri.

In 2013, he received the Buford M. Watson Jr. Award for Excellence in Public Management from the Kansas Association of City/County Management, the highest honor for a city manager in Kansas.

The Ragsdale Road widening contractor will be doing temporary widening along Ragsdale Road between Split Log Road and Balroyal Road beginning Wednesday, April 30th at 8 am.

There were previous weather delays that pushed the paving timeline. This will be a full one-lane closure with flaggers and will likely take 2 days to complete. Following the work, the contractor will shift traffic in certain areas along the roadway as the project continues.

People in the area should expect delays as they navigate the area during these times. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays.

Dear Residents of Somerset:

Assistant City Manager Jay Evans from City of Brentwood · 24 Apr
Photo from Assistant City Manager Jay E.

Several of you have reached out today to voice concern about the bulb-out intersection improvements under construction. Please know that your voice has been heard, and that those involved in this project at the City are committed to a positive outcome,

I have been working with the HOA for several years now on various solutions to the pedestrian concerns. This particular project began last year just after the accident with the young boy on the bicycle. I met on-site with several members of the HOA Board to review the challenges with the intersection. We then engaged our consulting traffic engineer, who conducted traffic counts to help inform the design and decision-making process. The intersection did not qualify for a full 4-way stop, but there were some improvements identified to help slow traffic at the intersection and provide some additional protection for pedestrians. We began by installing “Do Not Block Intersection” signage at Demery for northbound drivers. The physical improvements you see being installed now are the solution designed by the engineer. The narrower lane width is intentional and will serve to naturally slow down approaching drivers. Even with the bulb-out, an 11-foot lane width will still be maintained, giving plenty of room for vehicles pass one another.

The construction form boards in place may lead some to believe there will be a vertical curb (see illustration below) around the radius. That radius section will actually be a mountable curb (also below), much like what is provided at most ADA-accessible crosswalks. It is designed so that tires are not damaged if people turn too tight or if emergency or other long-wheelbase vehicles need more room.

With regard to placing a sidewalk the entire length of Aberdeen, we have discussed this many times. I personally believe it is the most meaningful improvement that could be made for the kids travelling to and from school. Unfortunately, this requires 100% agreement of the homeowners along that stretch, as the City does not condemn private property or tear up resident’s landscaping, driveways, irrigation and other improvements for the installation of pedestrian facilities. Every time the HOA has discussed this with property owners along Aberdeen, they’ve been unsuccessful. Some folks just don’t want a sidewalk in their front yard. It wasn’t there when they bought their property, and they don’t want one forced upon them.

Due to standards that govern transportation engineering design, not all solutions one may see in other locations are available for the Aberdeen/Demery intersection. Roadway widths, traffic volumes, pedestrian volumes, turning movements, proximity to other intersections, nearby utilities, stormwater conveyances, and available right-of-way are all limiting factors. The improvements that are being constructed are the design professionals’ best solution for this particular intersection. I hope you will understand that what is being done is very intentional and is done out of the interest of increasing safety for neighborhood children. Should the results of this project not meet with the intent, we will revisit the issue and see what more can be done, or what can be done differently.

Lastly, I believe the HOA members who I have interacted with will attest that this is not just a random neighborhood project for me. I have personally walked the length of Aberdeen in the mornings when kids are headed to school. I've seen firsthand the challenges that this corridor presents, with no sidewalks, personal and service vehicles parked in the road, vehicles traveling, and small kids on foot and on bicycles. There's often moms with smaller children in strollers along with them. If there is any neighborhood situation in Brentwood that keeps me up at night, it is this one. Please have patience and let's see how the improvements play out, knowing that we will make changes in the future if needed.

Best Regards,

Jay Evans
